A new data-sharing agreement between Brazil's consumer protection agency and its advertising watchdog aims to speed up enforcement against unlicensed operators.

Brazil's National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon), part of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, will begin receiving weekly reports regarding illegal betting sites.

 Indeed, these reports will list around 700 illegal betting sites identified and taken down by the National Advertising Self-Regulation Council (Conar). 

The cooperation agreement is designed to strengthen enforcement against irregular betting advertising in the country.

The announcement was made by National Consumer Secretary Ricardo Morishita during a press conference, who said Senacon will also gain access to data on the advertising campaigns tied to those platforms, which would allow for a more targeted enforcement strategy.

"We estimate that, through this cooperation, we will receive weekly reports on around 700 illegal bets identified and taken down by Conar. We will also have access to the advertising data, which will allow for a differentiated strategy to combat these illegalities," Morishita said.

The partnership is part of the Federal Government's push to tighten oversight of the sports betting market and curb the promotion of platforms operating outside the regulated system. 

The data is expected to support investigations and administrative action against companies that breach the rules governing the sector.

Recently, Brazil's Finance Ministry reported that 925,000 people are now enrolled in the country's self-exclusion program, up sharply from roughly 600,000 in June.

Separately, a joint operation in the state of Paraíba, led by the state's Public Prosecutor's Office with support from the Civil Police and the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting, froze more than BR102m ($20m) in assets linked to an unlicensed gambling network.
